A clearer description of the person who sexually assaulted a woman in Hokowhitu has been released.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said the 19-year-old victim, who was attacked in her Morris St home on Wednesday night, was interviewed late yesterday.

She described her attacker as a male of Maori or Pacific Island descent of athletic build, medium height and with short dark hair.

She was unsure of his age, but did say the attacker was wearing dark clothing at the time.

Mr Sheridan said multiple calls from the public after publicity around the attack had been helpful.

''It [also] demonstrates the public's disgust at crimes of this nature.''

Police would be back in the area today talking to neighbours, he said.
