A Palmerston North man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting an Awatapu College student on her way to school.
The 14-year-old was walking to school on College St last Friday when a man got out of a car and grabbed her by the arm shortly after 9am.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said the girl put up a fight and managed to break away from the man.
She suffered bruising to her arm.
Following a police investigation, Leon James Burns, 37, was arrested on Saturday and charged with assault on a female.
He appeared in the Palmerston North District Court yesterday.
He entered no plea and was remanded on bail to reappear on March 19.
Awatapu College principal Gary Yeatman said the school would be putting out messages to students about staying safe on the way to school, and was pleased to hear someone had been arrested for the attack.
