A Kelvin Grove house fire sent smoke billowing across the city this morning in a fire fighters training exercise.

The James Line house, destined for demolition, was donated to the Palmerston North fire brigade and set alight about 9am this morning.

After a team of eight volunteer fire fighters on a qualification course took turns entering the house and practising different fire fighting techniques, the house was left to burn out.

By 11am it was all but smouldering rubble and it was time for a well-earned coffee.

A digger was standing by to clear up the mess once it finally burnt out, and a new building is expected to be erected on the land by its owners in the near future.
