A Dannevirke man reported to be one of two potential Labour candidates for the Ikaroa-Rawhiti electorate has refused to comment on his candidacy.

Several media outlets have said Hayden Hape was being considered for the by-election to replace MP Parekura Horomia, who died this week.

Speaking to the Manawatu Standard from Dannevirke yesterday, Mr Hape said it was too soon to comment on the by-election.

"I'd prefer to wait until the tangi is finished, we've got to pay our respect to Para."

TV3 News reported last night Mr Hape and Meka Whaitiri were the two potential Labour candidates.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
