A 27-year-old Hastings woman suffered serious injuries when her car left the road in icy conditions in Tararua on Saturday morning.

The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter was called to the accident at about 8am near Norsewood to help the injured woman.

Rescue helicopter pilot Chris Moody said a St John paramedic stabilised the patient at the scene before she was airlifted to Hutt Valley Hospital for specialist treatment.

Norsewood Volunteer Fire Brigade was on hand to assist with the extraction of the patient from the wrecked vehicle, Mr Moody said.
