LATEST: Police and fire investigators have cordoned off a house in Westbrook after a suspicious fire in the early hours of this morning.
Palmerston North fire crews were called to the Robinson Cres house shortly before 4am to put out a fire in the vacant three-bedroom Housing New Zealand home.
They were called back to the house about 10.30 this morning after a small area reignited.
Neighbours said the woman who lived in the Housing New Zealand rental property moved out a week ago and flew out to Australia the night of the fire.
The house had been in the family for 26 years, and the woman who lived there had taken it on when her father died, and had five children, one woman said.
