Palmerston North City Library is to start a year-long trial of new hours from August 12.

Four days a week it will open half an hour earlier, at 9.30am, and Wednesday and Friday "late night" closures will be scrapped in favour of an extension to 8pm on Thursdays.

Manager of planning and performance Janet Ellery said the changes were based on feedback.

"The survey that was held earlier this year gave us a very clear indication that our open hours needed to change."

The trial will run for one year, when city librarian Anthony Lewis said other proposals such as extending Sunday hours, currently 1pm to 4pm, would be considered.

The Welcome Lounge at the library's front entrance will now open from 8am Monday to Saturday inclusive and from 10am on Sundays, providing an extra 15 hours of partial opening.

The community libraries at Awapuni, Ashhurst, Roslyn and Te Patikitiki will have new hours from August 5. They will be closed on Monday mornings, opening on Tuesday and Thursday mornings instead, and will remain open during lunch hours. In all, the libraries will be open an extra seven hours a week.

The new hours can be seen on the library's website.

The longer hours in Palmerston North are in contrast to Horowhenua, where opening hours have been cut.
