A Cathay Pacific flight was diverted to Ohakea Air Force Base after a plane broke down on Auckland Airport's runway.

The plane in Auckland had trouble with its brakes and needed to be towed.

Flights were diverted to Christchurch, while one flight from Hong Kong was directed to land at Ohakea.

The flight was on the ground for a short time before taking off again, bound for Auckland.

A defence force spokesman said no more planes were due to be diverted to the air force base today.
