LATEST:

A 23-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly soliciting a schoolgirl for a sex act this morning.

The man was picked up by police about 10:20am.

Senior Sergeant Brett Calkin said the man would likely face a charge of offensive behaviour.

He will appear in the Palmerston North District Court next week.

The arrest came after a 15-year-old girl was solicited for a sex act while walking to school this morning.

The Awatapu College student was walking in the vicinity of Winchester and Rugby Sts, when a man pulled up next to her about 7.30am.

Mr Calkin said the man, driving a Silver BMW, first asked the girl for directions, then told her he would give her a ride to school if she performed a sex act on him.

He offered to pay her $50 if she did it.

The girl kept calm, and ran to a friend's house nearby where police were called.

The man was described as short, skinny, with short dark hair, wearing dark jeans and a black button down dress coat.
He was driving a two-door hatchback.

The girl was shaken, but continued to school where she made a statement to police.
