State Highway 3 through Manawatu Gorge reopened after maintainence
The Manawatu Gorge has reopened after roading crews finished work at the site of the massive 2011 slip.
The New Zealand Transport Agency closed State Highway 3 through the gorge from 10.30am on Tuesday as part of an ongoing maintenance programme.
It was reopened at 1.50pm after work was complete.
Agency highway manager Ross I'Anson said several large trees needed to be removed from the top of the slip site.
Since removing the trees may send debris falling on to the road, the agency closed the road during the trees' removal.
"We do appreciate the importance of the Manawatu Gorge road and we thank road users for their patience while we undertake this work."
While the road was closed, motorists had to take detours via Saddle Rd or the Pahiatua Track. This will added about 15 minutes to a journey in either direction.
