Arsonist or squatter starts fire
Levin police are seeking witnesses after a fire in a disused KiwiRail building.
Fire Services were called to the block of buildings by the rail yard on Cambridge Street South about 6.40pm on Wednesday.
Police say fire services are unsure if the fire is arson, or the result of someone squatting in the building lighting a fire to keep warm that got out of control.
Levin Detective Sergeant Peter Vine said the fire appeared to have been lit using old debris and material left inside one of the rooms of the building.
The fire service was called by someone who saw the fire.
Only a small section of the inside of the building was damaged and it was quickly brought under control.
No one was injured.
Police would like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area about the time of the fire, or may know something about it.
Anyone with information can contact Levin Police on 06 366 0500 or anonymously on the Crime Stoppers line on 0800 555111.
