A young man has died after a crash near Mt Bruce in Tararua this morning.

An ambulance central communications spokesman said the Life Flight Trust Helicopter met an ambulance just south of Mt Bruce on State Highway 2 following the 9am crash, but paramedics were unable to save the man.

A police central communications spokesman said the car the 20-year-old male was driving had hit a bank, and the driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was initially being transferred to Wairarapa Hospital with serious injuries.

A diversion was in place on SH2 through Mauriceville and would likely remain until about 12.30pm.

The police serious crash unit were investigating.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
