Hundreds of Feilding residents turned out at the weekend to watch 1575 ducks, not real ones, float down the Makino Stream raising money for Eden Christian Kindergarten's new sandpit.

Manager Hilary Humphrey said the plastic ducks were hired from a Havelock North Kindergarten that pioneered the duck "race" as a fundraiser.

People "bought" the numbered ducks, and watched them bob along the 300-metre water course to the Makino Park playground.

There were sponsored prizes for the claimants of the first 20 ducks across the finish line.

The event, along with a sausage sizzle and cake stall, raised an estimated $7500, which will go toward the price of a sand-pit redevelopment, complete with shade sails.

Work on the project will begin in the next school holidays.

Opinion poll

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
