Burst pipe cancels hockey games in Palmerston North
A burst pipe has forced the cancellation of hockey in Palmerston North this weekend.
The problem is expected to be resolved before the weekend beginning April 29.
Hockey Manawatu general manager Kevin Nicholson said the pressure from the pumps on the turf could create leaks in pipes.
The leak meant they could not have the pumps going to spray the all-weather turf, as is required for play.
"We have to turn the pipes off because they can't be used without creating more damage."
Nicholson said the leak was on the edge of the turf.
However, it was leaking on to the footpath and would need repairing, he said
"It is not a Rotorua geyser."
He said leaks like this could happen once a year.
Many teams were already playing away or were playing non-competitive games, Nicholson.
"If it was going to happen, this was a good weekend for it to happen."
He was hopeful that fixing the problem would not prove overly complicated.
