Upgrade works along Manawatu's Saddle Rd have begun.

The New Zealand Transport agency has advised motorists that road maintenance and upgrade works to sections of the pavement on the Saddle Rd began on Sunday night.

The road, between Ashhurst and Woodville, is under extra pressure following the closure of State Highway 3 through the Manawatu Gorge, and several sections were in need of critical maintenance, a transport agency statement says.

The road, for westbound traffic between Woodville and Ashhurst, was closed on Monday, with a detour in place at the Pahiatua Track.

For eastbound traffic, between Ashhurst and Woodville, a single lane was open on the Saddle Rd.

The westbound lane was expected to be closed between 9am and 3pm on days the works goes ahead. The road is fully open outside these hours.

Decisions on whether work would take place would be made each day.

The transport agency website stated the works were expected to finish on December 31.

The agency has taken over management and maintenance of Saddle Rd from Tararua District Council, and had been doing spot repairs on potholes.
