A Palmerston North man's children will get a special Christmas surprise when they look in their stocking after their father's $250,000 Instant Kiwi windfall.

The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, picked up the winning Instant Kiwi 'Stacks of Cash' ticket while buying his weekly Lotto ticket.

"I never have much luck with Lotto and Big Wednesday, but seem to have a lucky touch with Instant Kiwis - I seem to win something almost every time," he said.

"But I'd never won more than $100, so when I saw I'd won the Stacks of Cash top prize... $250,000!.It just didn't feel real."

The winner has decided to use some of his winnings as a surprise Christmas bonus for his kids.

"I want to use the money to help my kids - I reckon they'll get a bit of a shock come Christmas Day when I hand each of them an envelope with $20,000 in it."

A regular Lotto customer, the winner said he would continue to buy tickets.

"I bought another Instant Kiwi yesterday and won $40 - I guess my luck hasn't run out yet! I definitely feel like a very lucky person."

The winning ticket was sold at Pioneer New World in Palmerston North.
