Clear and cool party time forecast
New Year revellers are expected to see in 2014 with a clear and cool night tonight.
Organisers of Palmerston North's big end-of-year party in The Square are, therefore, suggesting to the hundreds expected to attend that they dress appropriately.
Karen Heaphy, of Lancewood Events, said people would be wise to bring an extra blanket to sit on, in case the grass is damp.
MetService meteorologist Tristan Oakley said fine weather was expected tonight though it would be cool, with today's predicted high of 23 degrees Celsius dropping to a low of 11 overnight.
"We're expecting fine, clear skies. It might get a bit cooler once the sun sets because there won't be anything to trap the heat of the day."
New Year's Day was not as promising, with some scattered showers expected and some northwesterly wind, Oakley said.
Tonight's New Year's Eve celebration begins at 6.30pm and includes a countdown for the kids at 9.30pm for those unable to stay up until midnight.
Performances will include The Katy Perry Show and entertainment by The Monroes, Kiwibop, Captain Festus McBoyle and Truly Made.
"We are still looking forward to hosting an alcohol-free, family-friendly event that everyone in Palmerston North can attend to bring in the New Year.
Meanwhile, Wellington will not hold a public New Year's Eve celebration after an "operational decision" was made by city council staff.
Spokesman Richard MacLean said the council planned a January 1 event instead.
