An 18-year-old man waving an imitation pistol at cars driving along Palmerston North's Ferguson St has been arrested and charged by police.

The man was found after police cordoned off a house in Moore St, West End, about 5pm yesterday.

The gun was recovered from the house and found to be an imitation, police spokesman Marc Clausen said. The Moore St house where the man sought refuge had five occupants who were known to the man, Mr Clausen said.

The teenager is due to appear in the Palmerston North District Court later this month on a charge of presenting a firearm-like object.

The incident is the second firearm-related callout for police in two days in Palmerston North.

On Thursday, police confiscated a BB gun from two boys after a member of the public was shot with the weapon in Broadway Ave.

The person was not injured as it was a relatively low-powered gun.

Police found two 14-year-old boys near the Palmerston North District Court, and confiscated their gun so it could be destroyed.

The boys were trespassed from Downtown at the request of a security guard at the shopping mall.
