A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assault after punching a man in the head at a Palmerston North gym.

The alleged assault took place inside popular Pitt St gym City Fitness at about 12pm today, Palmerston North police acting sergeant Jason Turner said.

The man hit, a 39-year-old, had cuts to his lip and was checked by ambulance staff at the scene.

The alleged assault had been a case of mistaken identity, Turner said.

"He decided to settle a disagreement with his fist but he didn't even know the guy. He got the wrong person."

The 20-year-old will appear in the Palmerston North District Court next week.
