Police are investigating the death of a disabled teen who drowned in a bath while in respite care.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said a 15-year-old boy was found submerged in the bath at a Palmerston North home on Friday evening.

A St John Ambulance was called, and he was taken to Palmerston North Hospital intensive care unit.

He was pronounced dead just before midnight.

Mr Sheridan said police were investigating on behalf of the coroner.

The respite care facility was working with the family, as was victim support.

Mr Sheridan would not divulge the nature of the teen's disability.

The investigation was expected to take a couple of weeks, he said.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
