Police investigating the fire at Sage Cafe and Restaurant in Feilding have yet to determine whether they are dealing with an arson.

Dannevirke Detective Sergeant Shane Brown said it was not clear if they were dealing with an arson, but it appeared that the premises may have been insecure at the time.

"Scene examinations are still being carried out and fire experts have more work to be done," said Mr Brown.

"While it doesn't scream arson, there are some issues around security."

There had been reports of youth acting suspiciously around the area on the night of the fire, but neither Mr Brown nor Feilding police could confirm this.

The investigation is ongoing and Mr Brown said that next week the file would be handed over to a Feilding-based investigation team, as Dannevirke has been covering the area over the holiday period.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
