LATEST: Two people remain in hospital this morning following a head-on crash on State Highway 3 north of Palmerston North.

Emergency services were called about 4.15pm yesterday after the collision at Mt Stewart between a white Toyota Corolla hatchback and a black Ford 4WD.

The male driver of the Corolla had to be freed by firefighters from Feilding and Palmerston North.

Palmerston North senior station officer Rod Freeman said the vehicle's roof had to be removed and the front of the vehicle pulled off of the patient. The man suffered injuries to his upper legs as a result of the crash, Mr Freeman said.

He was taken to Palmerston North Hospital by road in what a St John spokesman said was a serious condition. The driver of the Ford was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

Both were in stable conditions in a general ward this morning.

The crash happened in the southbound lane of SH3 near the intersection with Stewart Rd. The lane was closed for more than an hour as police investigated and the scene was cleared.

South-bound motorists were diverted onto the north-bound passing lane.

Police at the scene would not comment on the accident saying they were still investigating.
