A Palmerston North man who stopped medication for his urges was driven to steal a woman's underwear from the washing line before using them to masturbate.

Issac Morehu Ponga, 31, is on medication to control his mood and behaviour.

But he was not taking the drugs when, on January 10, he snuck into a back yard of a property on Church St, Palmerston North.

He went to the washing line and grabbed a pair of women's underwear, before using them to masturbate himself while he was in the yard.

When spotted by a neighbour, he ran to his car and drove off.

But the neighbour managed to take down the registration plate and called police.

When caught, Ponga told police he had stopped taking his medication because it was making him feel tired.

He pleaded guilty to unlawfully being on someone else's property in the Palmerston North District Court this morning - a crime he had been convicted of before, as recently as April 2013.

Duty lawyer Tony Thackery said Ponga had decided he would be able to manage without his medication.

"He thought he was alright without it, but that has been proven wrong."

Ponga's partner had been helping him manage his mood, and he realised his offending could not continue, Mr Thackery said.

Judge Gerard Lynch said Ponga's offending had "disturbing qualities", and would have caused the homeowner distress.

It all could have been avoided if he stayed on his medication, Judge Lynch said.

"You got yourself in the position that you believed your condition was under control.

"You may have to remain on the medication for life, which is something you have to get your head around.

"If it is making you tired, you have to talk to your GP about alternate medication."

Judge Lynch sentenced Ponga to 75 hours community work and nine months supervision.
