Horror crash on Desert Road
LATEST: An elderly couple were taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious and critical condition after a horror two-car crash on the Desert Rd.
Police said the two cars collided in an area of roadworks at 1.30pm yesterday, trapping the couple in their car.
Desert Rd was closed for emergency services to access the scene, including rescue helicopters from Taranaki and Rotorua.
The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter was dispatched but poor weather forced it back.
Ambulance central communications team manager Anita Halbert said three patients were treated, including the elderly couple.
Taupo roading police manager Fane Troy said a man was charged with dangerous driving causing injury and will appear in Taupo District Court tomorrow.
He was injured in the crash.
"It was an area of roadworks where they had just resealed the road that morning," Troy said.
"Police urge motorists at this time of year to slow down through road works, the temporary speed restrictions are there for a reason."
The accident was described as "carnage" by one Twitter user who drove past the accident scene.
Rachel Barnett tweeted that three cars had been involved in a serious crash that had closed one lane of State Highway 1.
Barnett said there was poor visibility on the road at the time and she had been passed by two ambulances.
