Dannevirke police have charged a man following a vicious assault at a Dannevirke Hotel.

A 36 year-old man was arrested today will appear in the Palmerston North District Court tomorrow on a wounding charge after an incident at the Merrylees Hotel on Sunday.

Senior Sergeant Nathan Davis said the man is alleged to have started a fight with a 49 year-old fellow patron of the hotel's bar, punching him multiple times before stomping on his head.

The injured man suffered a split lip and lost a tooth.

He was taken to Palmerston North Hospital.

Mr Davis thanked the members of the community who helped track the man down after the incident.
