A 42-year-old man was taken to Palmerston North Hospital as a precaution after the silver BMW 318 that he was driving took out a lamp post and crashed down a 3-metre-deep ditch.

Police and ambulance services were called to the scene of the crash, on the corner of Jackeytown Rd and State Highway 56 near Palmerston North, about 9.45am yesterday.

Constable Chris Dunn said the man had been travelling to Wellington and was turning right onto SH56 from Tiakitahuna Rd when he lost control of the car.

The car hit the lamp post with a street sign attached, which fell down over the ditch and left a live wire exposed.

The car settled in the ditch facing upwards.

The wet conditions after a prolonged dry spell had definitely been a factor in the crash, Mr Dunn said.

The man was treated by ambulance staff for minor injuries and interviewed by police before being taken to Palmerston North Hospital.

A tow truck company retrieved the car from the ditch.
