The laundry at Palmerston North Hospital was slightly damaged after a suspicious fire broke out in an unknown car left parked up against the building.

Milson Fire Station was alerted to the fire, outside the hospital laundry in Bodell Place, about 5.20pm on Saturday.

The vehicle, a grey Mitsubishi station wagon, was parked against the wall when it caught fire. Fire safety officers had attended the scene and police were investigating.

Inspector Brett Calkin said the fire was under investigation and asked people who may have seen anything suspicious to call police.

Commercial support services group manager Jeff Small said MidCentral District Health Board was fully supporting police.

"We have supplied the police with CCTV footage, and are ready to assist further if needed," he said. "Currently, we do not believe the car was related to the hospital, and there have been no reported car thefts from hospital grounds."

There was minimal damage to the laundry.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
