The beleaguered Feilding Volunteer Fire Brigade has suffered another blow.

Firefighter Kevin David Gilchrist, 27, has been charged with male assaults female after an incident in his flat at the fire station on March 10.

He appeared in the Palmerston North District Court last week and has been remanded on bail to reappear at the end of the month.

Manawatu Fire area manager Mitchell Brown said Gilchrist had not been stood down following the charge, rather, he had asked to take leave, "to sort some personal matters out" following the alleged incident.

There would be no internal investigation until the court process was completed, he said.

Gilchrist lived in a flat at the fire station but whether he stayed there was a matter for him and his partner, rather than a tenancy issue.

However, it was Mr Brown's understanding Gilchrist was not staying in the flat at the moment.

Last year the brigade had to repay money to the Lottery minister's discretionary fund after the Department of Internal Affairs found it had failed to disclose its true financial position when applying for financial assistance.

The department also reviewed the management of the brigade. The outcome has still not been disclosed.
