No charges will be laid following the death of a Chinese man and the serious assault of another person at a Palmerston North home.

Police were called to a Russell St property in Palmerston North on the evening of February 7 after neighbours reported screaming.

A Chinese man in his 60s died at the scene with severe burns to his body.

A relative of the man, a woman in her 30s, was in a critical condition following stab wounds to her face and upper body, but survived her injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said the investigation into the events of that day were all but finished, and the investigation team was liaising with the coroner.

No charges would be laid.
