A suspicious fire at a vacant Palmerston North house this morning is being investigated by police.

The fire was thought to be started by someone lighting cardboard beside the back door of the house on Alexander St in Awapuni at about 2.30am.

Palmerston North Fire Station Officer Malcolm Prince said the doorway was damaged but it was fortunate the fire had only caught hold there and not spread to the rest of the house.

The fire was out before firefighters arrived at the scene, he said.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
