A Palmerston North feline that had a nasty run in with a car has been dubbed "the bionic cat" after a charitable vet put him back together with metal plates and screws worth $2500.

Hank, as staff at Anderson's Veterinary Hospital have named him, had two legs broken when he was hit by a vehicle in Milson earlier this month, Manawatu SPCA manager Danny Auger said. "We found a cat very much in shock, and I would imagine a lot of pain."

Hank was taken to Anderson's. "He was pretty sick; he almost died," vet Malcolm Anderson said.

This week Hank had three hours of surgery, including having metal screws and plates installed in his front leg. Within a day he was up walking on his broken legs and as a result SPCA and vet staff have dubbed him "the bionic cat".

"He's an amazing cat," Dr Anderson said. "He shouldn't be walking around like that."

He must also be quite the charmer. Dr Anderson said his company would cover the $2500 cost of the operation. "It's nice to do something nice sometimes."

Dr Anderson said some cats just "stand out" and you cannot say no to helping them. "He's a really happy cat, [and] because he's a young cat he will heal up pretty quickly."

Mr Auger said though the SPCA had a welfare fund for cases such as Hank's, it would not have been able to cover the cost of this operation.

Hank was such a friendly cat, it was clear he has "been loved by somebody", he said. If his owners cannot be located, he will be put up for adoption once he has recovered.
