A 4.2 magnitude earthquake reported near Dannevirke this afternoon was a "ghost quake".
At first Geonet reported the earthquake was located 15km west of Dannevirke at a depth of 6km at 4.35pm.
Despite reports to Geonet of the earthquake being felt in Wellington and the Kapiti Coast Geonet soon announced it was a misreading.
"Sorry the Dannevirke event is a 'Ghost Quake' it's actually a deep earthquake south of Fiji," A Geonet Twitter account said.
Geonet's initial reports of earthquakes are automated with the information then double checked by its staff.
