A woman cyclist in her 50s is dead after a collision with a truck on Summerhill Drive in Palmerston North.

The driver of a semi-trailer truck involved in the crash was shaken, but not injured.

The cyclist and truck were both travelling up Summerhill Drive just after 7am Sunday when the crash happened.

"We are still in the process of piecing together what factors have led to the crash and it is too early at this stage to comment on any potential charges," said acting Detective Sergeant Shelley Ross of the Manawatu CIB.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating while officers continue to make inquiries and speak to witnesses.

The woman's name has not been released.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
