Light drizzle has not been enough to prevent a total outdoor fire ban in Palmerston North.

The city council has declared a prohibited fire season from midnight on Wednesday.

Principal rural fire officer Stewart Davies said no fires are to be lit in the Palmerston North Rural Fire area, with the exception of barbecues lit in properly constructed containers and fuelled with LPG.

All fire permits previously issued will be cancelled until further notice.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
