The passenger of the Cessna training plane that crashed into a digger on a transporter while coming in to land at Taonui Aerodrome remains in Palmerston North Hospital.

A hospital communications spokesman said the man in his early 20s remained in a stable condition in a ward this afternoon.

The Cessna was on a Flight Training Manawatu flight with the instructor controlling the plane when it clipped the digger, which was crossing Taonui Rd about 5pm on Wednesday.

The plane broke apart and both occupants were taken to hospital.

The passenger was initially taken to the intensive care unit, while the pilot, a woman in her early 20s, was taken to a ward with serious injuries. She has since been released.

A Civil Aviation Authority inquiry into the crash is continuing.
