Anzac crowds growing every year
A slew of Anzac Day commemorations remembering those who lost their lives to war, and those who came home, will take place in Palmerston North and beyond on Friday.
Anzac Day committee chairman and co-ordinator Harry Komene, who has organised Palmerston North's dawn and civic Anzac Day ceremonies, said he expected this year would see more people than ever gather to pay their respects.
Komene, a Vietnam veteran, has been involved in organising the Anzac Day ceremonies, first as a parade marshall then as chairman of the organising committee, for the past seven years.
Over that time, the crowds had grown every year as increasing numbers of young people commemorated the occasion, he said.
This year commemorations will include a fly past by one of Ohakea Air Force Base's NH90 helicopters, and it will be Linton Military Camp Colonel Nick Gillard's first time giving an Anzac Day address as new commander of the camp.
Palmerston North's commemorations will last all day, starting at 5am when the Club Palmerston, Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club, doors open ahead of the veterans' march to the cenotaph in The Square shortly before 6am.
The club took over the role of the Palmerston North RSA's own clubrooms after it went into receivership in 2012.
The Cosmopolitan Club was first used as an alternative venue last year, and had been retained this year, Komene said, but may not be a permanent solution.
Komene said he expected about 60 veterans to take part in the dawn parade.
