Previous employment woes for SkyCity worker
A SkyCity casino employee who got in trouble for carrying a Bible at work was involved in an unjustified dismissal case at her previous job.
Tuni Parata was due to resume her work at the casino today. She had faced a disciplinary hearing for carrying the Bible in her pocket against the casino's uniform policy.
Employment Tribunal records show Parata was previously involved in an unjustified dismissal case against the Department of Social Welfare in 1996.
The case, which was dismissed, also involved a breach of dress code.
Parata was unable to be contacted this afternoon but her union representative, Mike Treen at Unite, said he had heard her being asked about the incident at a media briefing yesterday.
He did not hear her explanation but heard her say her problems at Sky City had brought all the memories of her previous case flooding back.
''Tuni had a different version of what happened,'' he said.
''At the end of the day, they were meant to offer her job back but in the meantime, she got a job at the casino.''
