ANZ job losses expected by union
A union representing bank workers says ANZ's plans in Australia to offshore 131 back office jobs are being mirrored in New Zealand.
Robert Reid of FIRST Union said ANZ in New Zealand met the union and staff last week over a proposal to send 36 Auckland jobs in the lending services unit to Bangalore.
Fourteen new roles would be created "but that still leaves a net loss of 22 jobs", Reid said.
If the proposal went ahead, he understood it would take effect from mid-July.
ANZ was unable to reached for comment.
The union went public with the proposal after hearing a report that ANZ in Australia planned to offshore 131 jobs, redeploying about 60 staff and making the other 71 redundant, mostly from Sydney back offices.
"In both the New Zealand and Australian cases, these job losses caused by offshoring are completely unnecessary, given the profitability the bank is enjoying," Reid said.
