On Tuesday, December 1, at 12.15pm at Manchester Street School, 11-year-old Sam Pretious will say goodbye to his long wavy red locks when Christine Scott from Siz Sirs shaves his head to raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation.
With his hair long past the originally intended mullet, and considering his next move, Sam remembered a segment he had watched on TV1's Close Up about Child Cancer, and decided he would donate his hair to be made into a wig.
After some investigation, he found that his hair was not long enough to satisfy wig-making requirements.
Undeterred, he carried on the momentum and ended up with the Shave your Lid for a Brave Kid campaign.
"Every cent that gets donated to the Child Cancer Foundation goes to child cancer," said Sam.
The regional event is being held in Palmerston North on December 3, but Sam would like to maintain a Feilding focus.
He is shaving his lid two days earlier, then he and Mum Lainey Ellison will take the proceeds to Palmerston North.
"He's got beautiful hair," said Sam's mother.
"We are very proud of what he is doing – and it was all his idea."
Ms Elliston said there are donation tins supporting Sam at The Saleyards Cafe, Siz Sirs for Unisex Cuts, Waikato Milking systems, Manawatu and the Manchester Street School office.
Donations can also be made online at fundraiseonline.co.nz/sampretious/.
"If Sam can raise three or four hundred dollars, that's a great effort for an 11-year-old boy," she said.
