A witness has described flames leaping into the air as a massive blaze took hold at a Foxton sawmilling company last night.
The alarm was raised at 6.30pm, a fire communications spokesman said.
The building on Bergin Rd was understood to be a 100m long storage shed at the Foxton Sawmilling Company.
It was completely engulfed in flames.
A nearby resident, Matthew Dixon, said he could see flames leaping into the air through the trees.
"She's a decent old blaze."
Twelve fire engines were at the scene.
Fire crews have been called in from as far away as Palmerston North to help fight the blaze.
Meanwhile, Central Fire Communications reported there was also a significant house fire in Feilding late last night.
A spokesman said a house on the corner of Duke Street and North Street in Feilding was well ablaze and four units had been sent to extinguish the blaze.
Two units remained at the scene of the Foxton fire overnight on a watching brief, the spokesman said.
