Kihikihi Kings driver Kerry Remnant has become the most capped Teams Champs driver.
The Kings were bundled out of the Teams Champs in last night's qualifying at the Robertson Holden Speedway, beaten by the Manawatu Mustangs and the Christchurch Glen Eagles, but it's a night Remnant won't forget.
"My parents and family had been coming here for years, but my first time here was to race and I had never teams raced before," Remnant said. "I can remember the atmosphere as incredible but not as big as it is today."
When Remnant rolled out for the Kings first race against the Mustangs he became the most capped driver with 38 drives, breaking the record of the great Panthers stalwart Dave Evans.
Remnant's run almost stopped last night after a hit by Manawatu Mustang Scott Joblin took out the side of his car. After hurried repairs, he only lasted half a lap before screeching to a halt.
The 36-year-old Tauranga mechanic has experienced the highs and lows of stockcars' biggest event.
In 2003 and 2004 Remnant spent an incredible two years with the Baypark Busters, who not only won at Palmerston North but also the Teams' Nationals at Waikaraka Park, Auckland.
"It's a lot different for me these days, but it doesn't stop the enthusiasm I've still got for teams racing."
Remnant said not only good cars are needed to win the Teams Champs – many things need to be in place behind the scenes.
"Of course you have to have good reliable cars but you need good sponsorship and good people in your corner. We had it at Baypark and the Panthers have had it in recent years.
"You always need that bit of luck on your shoulders as well."
