Palmerston North Boys' High School became the first school-aged team to win the Dale Shield for clay-target shooting at Woodville last Sunday.
The A team, made up of Matt Lynch, Cameron Shailer, James Abbiss, Callum Beattie and Brett Harpham, shot 98 from 100 over the two rounds of competition.
They shot 48 from 50 in the first round and sat in third-equal, but stormed home with a perfect round, all on the first attempt, in the second dig. Twenty-one teams from the lower North Island contested the event, which is the most sought-after trophy in the region.
Boys' High's B team, made up of Bevan Rowe, Huntar Leslie, Henry Clarke, Max Buchanan and Christian Wych, finished second-equal with 97 from 100 shots alongside the Palmerston North Gun Club's senior B team.
Both Boys' High teams were representing the Palmerston Gun Club as junior teams, and became only the fifth team from the club to win the shield, which has been contested for more than 60 years.
The shield was originally donated to the Wairarapa Gun Club by the Dale family.
