Gorgi van Lienen beat the heat and 174 others to win the fourth Manawatu Ladies Only Triathlon in Palmerston North yesterday.

A year nine Palmerston North Girls' High School student, Gorgi completed the 300m swim, 10km cycle and 2km run around the Esplanade in a time of 33min 53sec.

The more experience Kelly Carter was 46 seconds back in second place, while Freyberg year nine Dana Purdy rounded out the top three with a time of 36min 37sec.

Organiser Malcolm Brown said the annual event had again been a success despite a slight drop in numbers participating this year.

The superb weather had attracted an extra 20 people at the last minute and hundreds of spectators lined the course.

Triathlon in the city benefited from having the event with many signing up to the Manawatu Triathlon Club as a result of it, Brown said.

"We're having a great year. The last club event we had at Linton Military Camp brought out 185 people alone, which is the biggest we've ever had."
