The final day of the Otago-Central Districts Plunket Shield cricket fixture crawled to an expected draw yesterday as Otago had few problems batting off any slim hopes Central Districts had of running through them.
Otago began play yesterday at 37 for one and only a flurry of wickets in the first session would have put them at risk of losing the fixture outright.
Nightwatchman Neil Wagner improved his credentials as a useful batsman when he dug his toes in, scoring 68 in a 157-ball stay, while Dutch international Ryan ten Doeschate backed up his first-innings hundred with an unbeaten 54 in his 100th first-class match.
With the game meandering along at the tea break it was decided to call time on proceedings and accept the match would be drawn.
The first-innings points firmed up Central Districts' place at the top of the table thanks to veteran Mathew Sinclair's 36th first-class century. His knock of 142 was the key factor in Central Districts passing Otago's first-innings total of 427.
Both teams will take a break from the white clothing and red balls until January 24.
The focus will now switch solely to the Twenty20 format which will be played from now until January 20.
The Otago Volts' next fixture will be against the Wellington Firebirds in Dunedin starting at 2pm on Sunday.
The Central Districts Stags play Wellington in Wellington on Boxing Day.
