Taranaki's Chantelle Ngaia was named player of the year at Western Netball's annual prize-giving in Palmerston North during the weekend.

Ngaia was also named attacking player of the year after her consistent shooting performances in the national championships where she was named in the tournament team.

Other major winners were Lauren Burgess, who was named defending player of the year, and Jodi Beaumont, who was recently selected for the New Zealand under-21 squad, was named most promising player for Western One.

Alanah Cassidy, also a New Zealand under-21 team member, was named most promising player in the Western Lois Muir Challenge team and Sam Burkhart was named most promising player in the national age group championship-winning Western under-21 team.

A new award, for leadership, was presented to Western under-21 captain Hannah Broederlow.

Anna Brookie was umpire of the year after umpiring the New Zealand age group championships final and Sue Trim was bench official of the year.
