Oops! It appears that the Rongotea Cemetery - which has been maintained since last century by local councils - may not be on council land.

When Manawatu District Council recently went through the process to lodge a drainage easement for a neighbouring property it discovered the land the cemetery occupies was not owned by the council.

Archives are now being researched to see when and how the council took over managing and funding for the cemetery.

They are working with solicitors and the Land Information Office to clarify the situation.

The council community services group manager Brent Limmer said it came as a surprise to learn they technically did not own the land, but he was confident that because MDC and previous councils had funded and maintained the land for so long it would be found to be the lawful owner.
