A German tourist who was feared missing in New Zealand has been found safe and well.

Anja Schulze, 31, was unaware anyone was looking for her. She hadn't been heard from since February 2 when she emailed a friend thanking them for a gift.

She had told friends she was going to Golden Bay near Nelson, but never arrived at her destination, police said.

An international manhunt was launched after Schulze's worried friends reported her missing to Interpol on May 29. New Zealand police were asked to investigate but had been unable to find her until she made contact with them this afternoon.

Detective Sergeant Fran Moore said Schulze was safe and well in Central Otago. The tourist was unaware she was considered a missing person until a member of the public brought it to her attention, Moore said.

"We would like to thank the public for their assistance," Moore said.

Police yesterday appealed for anyone with information about Schulze's whereabouts to come forward. Overnight there were a number of calls from members of the public who reported suspected sightings of her in Christchurch, the West Coast and Auckland.

Schulze was born in Berlin but lived in Switzerland for about a decade before embarking on a gap year. She had a one-year holiday working visa for New Zealand.

She arrived in Auckland on December 7.
