Jimmy Cowan will make his first appearance for the Tasman Makos in the No 21 jersey when he starts off the bench in tomorrow's pre-season rugby match against Otago in Dunedin.

The former All Blacks halfback has joined his new team-mates for tomorrow's clash at Forsyth Barr Stadium, having not been involved in Wednesday's 24-22 loss to Canterbury in Glenmark. However, Cowan will be eased into action off the bench, with Billy Guyton set to start in the No 9 jersey.

Cowan was among the Makos' marquee signings for the 2014 ITM Cup season and the former Highlanders Super Rugby player will appreciate the chance to debut for his new province in familiar surroundings.

Young English lock Tom Hicks also starts alongside utility forward Jeff Lepa, with Marlborough's Nili Moala getting a start at blindside flank. Peter Samu will start in the No 7 jersey.

New Zealand under-20 representative David Havili also earns a start at first five-eighth, pushing Harlequins' regular No 10 out a place to second five-eighth as Tasman coach Kieran Keane continues to juggle his options - some necessitated by injury.

Tomorrow's game kicks off at 2.30pm
