Rapaura School's bell will be ringing in the fifth generation of one Marlborough family next week, as schools around the region open their doors for the start of the school year.
Twins Ajay and Jake Gane, 5, will tread in the footsteps of their great-great-great-grandmother when they walk through the school gates for their first day at school on Tuesday.
Their father, Laurin Gane, remembers his first day at school and although Rapaura School has changed a lot, recollects playing in the sandpit and swimming in the school pool.
"The school was a lot smaller back then, but there weren't many kids there – I was the only boy in my class," he said.
"I think my dad helped fundraise for the pool; it's a huge asset," he said.
The boys will be swimming every day at this time of year.
"They are really active and love swimming and fishing."
Mr Gane was not sure when his great-grandmother attended Rapaura School, but said his granddad, who died last year aged 98, and would have been there "many moons ago".
Mother Bridget Gane, said she would drive the twins to and from school for the first six months, otherwise they would have to get up too early to catch the bus.
"It will be a bit sad leaving them, but they are ready for the next step," she said.
"They have friends from Springlands kindy in their class and a couple of older cousins who are excited they will be there."
The boys were shy but said they were excited to be starting school.
Jake said his favourite thing at school was the slide, and he would not miss staying at home.
