Fans thrill to Makos' triumph
Team's triumph makes historyJOHN ALEXANDER
More than 4000 fervent Tasman Makos rugby supporters flocked to Lansdowne Park in Blenheim last night to see their team make ITM Cup history and beat the Southland Stags 13-10 in an absolute down to the wire nail-biter.
Stunning individual tries by wing Peter Betham and fullback Robbie Malneek spearheaded a win that has the Makos in second place, one point behind Counties Manukau on the Championships points ladder.
While there were only three tries in the match and conditions were near freezing, the Makos created numerous opportunities with their expansive and fearless approach which left fans both exhilarated and exasperated.
An even bigger crowd is expected at Lansdowne Park on Sunday where the Makos play their third match in seven days, this time against what is expected to be a far more enterprising Northland side, the match potentially a ripper.
The Makos will stay in Blenheim in the lead-up to Sunday's game, undertaking various public engagements around the province tomorrow.
